There are many things to love about the summer months—beach days, barbeques, vacations—but tossing and turning on a hot, sticky night, trying to get to sleep, is not one of them. When temperatures may be pushing triple digits, it’s often hard to get the rest you need. Here are some tips to stay cool to improve your odds of drifting off:

Have your A/C tuned up – If you’re running air conditioning to stay cool, make sure that it’s working as efficiently as possible by having a professional out to look over your system. (Bonus: regular maintenance can help prevent those breakdowns that always seem to happen during the worst heat waves.)

Keep the shades closed during the day – Maintaining a comfortable indoor temperature in your bedroom will be easier if you minimize the heat gain during the day. Leave your window shades closed as much as possible, and consider adding blackout and/or insulated shades to keep the heat at bay.

Switch to lighter bedding – This may seem obvious, but in winter we use heavy blankets and fluffy comforters to stay snugly warm, so stripping off the extra layers should be among the first things you do to stay cooler at night during the summer. If you can sleep with just a sheet over you, or none at all, great. If you need the feeling of extra covers over you, try using a loosely woven cotton blanket for greater breathability.

Stick to natural fibers – Synthetic fibers tend to trap heat and moisture, so make sure that both your bedding and your sleepwear are made from natural, breathable fibers like cotton, linen, or silk.

Use a fan – Moving air helps to dispel heat. Either a free-standing or ceiling fan can dramatically improve the comfort of your bedroom during sweltering summer nights. Although many people consider the white-noise effect of a fan to be a bonus, if you’re sensitive to noise, there are many quiet models on the market that can provide the breeze you’re looking for without excess volume.

Don’t exercise too close to bedtime – Exercising raises your core body temperature, which is exactly the opposite of what you want to do when it is time to rest. It’s especially critical to be conscious of this when the outside temps make it hard to achieve the natural dip in temperature that helps us get to sleep. Schedule your workouts for early in the day to avoid disrupting your rest.

Take a cool shower right before bed – A cool or lukewarm shower right before bedtime will both rinse off the sweat and grime of the day and help coax your body temperature down to a cooler, restful level.
